Teeth Straightening and Orthodontic Services in Perth

Orthodontics explained

Orthodontics aim to ensure that your teeth are appropriately positioned in a way that compliments the features and proportions of your face. Our philosophy is that we treat the individual, as opposed to providing a one-size-fits-all approach, giving you the opportunity to wear your best smile every day.

Providing you with orthodontic services is about more than just straightening crooked or crowded teeth. The variety of orthodontic solutions we provide ensures we accommodate all patients’ requirements.

This includes traditional metal braces, tooth coloured ceramic braces, and alternatives to conventional braces, such as Invisalign, lingual braces, and oral appliances to assist with jaw expansion and teeth positioning.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a virtually invisible way to straighten teeth without the use of traditional metal braces and wires.

NewSmile has several general dentists accredited and trained in Invisalign and can recommend whether it is suitable for you. In many (but not all) cases, Invisalign can be used to effectiely treat orthodontic issues such as crowding, spacing, crossbite, overbite and underbite.

Transparent aligners digitally designed are made to be worn comfortably and invisibly, and be easily removable for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing.

Why orthodontics matter

Orthodontics are a non-invasive means of developing or achieving a healthy, attractive, and well-aligned smile.

If you have crooked teeth, crowded teeth, or misaligned teeth or bite, it can cause dental or jaw problems over time. You may experience difficulties in maintaining good oral hygiene and gum health, or develop speech or chewing difficulties.

Crowded teeth with misaligned jaws can sometimes be involved with upper airway constrictions, increasing the risk of sleep apnoea.  This is why our approach to orthodontics takes into account correct breathing patterns, and the quality of your sleep.

A properly aligned bite can even help to relax the jaw muscles and minimise chronic headaches or migraines caused by jaw or muscle tension.

Orthodontics in more detail

When you have crooked or crowded teeth, our first step is to give you a clear diagnosis. We look at your overall oral health, dental and facial structure and development, and discuss your functional or cosmetic desires and requirements.

With orthodontics, we usually have a focus on extraction-free teeth straightening. This can be applied for adults and children in most cases. The orthodontic treatment we provide for children works in line with their growth and development.  Our experience has shown that children assessed by the age of seven may benefit most, allowing us to best plan for optimal results.

Crooked and Crowded Teeth

Crooked teeth, or crowded teeth, can be a mainly esthetic concern, but they can also lead to other, more serious dental problems. Crooked or crowded teeth occur when they are misaligned, and there is an incorrect relation between the teeth (improper occlusion). If you have crooked or crowded teeth, then this may interfere with proper chewing, jaw relation, hygiene and aesthetics.
