Dental crowns and veneers

Dental crowns are one of many types of dental restoration we perform at our Perth dental clinic, here at NewSmile in Subiaco. Dental crowns embrace the entire tooth structure, increasing its strength compared to traditional fillings, whilst also idealising its aesthetics. Veneers on the other hand, cover the front and the biting edge of the tooth, simply to change the appearance of its visible part only.

If broken, worn or misaligned teeth are affecting your smile, then well designed porcelain veneers and/or crowns may be an effective way of getting the smile you have always dreamed of. Discrepancies in tooth shape and colour can often be effectively treated with porcelain veneers to the front 6 incisor teeth to transform the entire smile.

The best solution for tooth restoration will depend on your personal diagnosis. It’s always important to remember that tooth shape and colour, and smile layout, is as individual as hair colour, skin tone, and facial shape.  What suits one person may not suit another, so it is important to select a dentist that has an eye, not only for health and technical issues, but also for style and detail.

Fillings and Dental Restorations

A restoration directly repairing damaged or decayed tooth is often called a “filling” or “direct restoration’. NewSmile Dental Centre Perth is a completely amalgam-free practice and uses only tooth-coloured metal-free restorative materials such as composite resin, glass ionomer, and ceramic (porcelain or zirconia). Traditional dental amalgam fillings have a darker colour, and have been the subject of several studies investigating the safety of their components (silver, tin, copper and most notably mercury).

Restorations of decayed, broken or damaged teeth will form part of your personalised comprehensive oral care plan. Your treatment may consist of simple small restorations (fillings), or the use of indirect dental onlays, crowns and veneers for more advanced reconstructive and cosmetic dentistry.

What to expect

When planning treatment that involves the use of multiple dental crowns, veneers or fillings, your holistic oral health plan may also be called a “smile makeover”. This is because realigning, optimising, restoring or replacing teeth can have a spectacular impact on the quality of your smile.  Where relevant, we will consider:

  • Facial measurements
  • How your teeth look in a range of expressions
  • X-rays
  • Diagnostic models and if involving implants, 3D images of your jaw
  • Analogue or Digital Smile Design

After we have given you a clear diagnosis, we will always present your options to you visually, ensuring that you are fully informed before making your final choice.

Broken teeth, Wear and Decay

Broken teeth, chipped, worn or damaged teeth need repair, but the first important step is thorough diagnosis, and treatment planning for the best way to restore your dental health in the long term. There needs to be an understanding of what caused these problems in the first place, so that they don’t recur.
