Types of sedation dentistry in brief

There are a few types of sedation dentistry and at NewSmile we use various techniques to make your procedure as comfortable as possible. Local anaesthetic is obviously the most common way to reduce discomfort, and it may very well be the technique you remember most from your last treatment at the dentist.

Nowadays, sedation dentistry is rapidly gaining popularity, because it allows you to experience less or no discomfort, and it allows us - as your dentist - to plan more complex work in a more efficient and relaxing way for you.

Gas (inhalation) sedation

You may have heard the term “laughing gas” when referring to the inhalation of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask over your nose. This is a common way to introduce light sedation and a degree of relaxation/anxiety control. Your dentist controls the amount of gas and the level of sedation, and typically the effects of this gas wear off quickly after your procedure. With this type of sedation, you may be able to drive yourself home after the procedure after a short recovery. Another type of gas sedation is Penthrox or “the green whistle”. Due to various scientific reasons this is generally not the favoured choice at our clinic, but can be very effective for particular patients and procedures. We recommend that gas sedation can be suitable for shorter and non-invasive procedures.

In other cases, more advanced forms of sedation might be advised. With more complex cosmetic dentistry such as oral surgery, advanced smile creation or implant reconstruction, your dentist may recommend the use of IV Sedation.

IV (intravenous) sedation

IV Sedation is a common procedure we use at NewSmile Dental. The sedative drug is administered through a vein, and it starts working more quickly than sedation through inhalation. Another benefit is that your dentist can adjust the level of sedation continually.

At NewSmile Dental, we firmly believe that you shouldn’t be held back from achieving your optimal dental health or reconstructive care, for fear of discomfort or pain. Thanks to our particular expertise in IV Sedation Dentistry, we have been able to help thousands of patients who suffered from dental phobia or anxiety.
